Circulation Policies

Law students, upon presenting a valid UT ID to Circulation staff, may check out any of the Library's circulating materials. (Primary source materials, digests, looseleaf binders, microforms, periodicals, and reference resources do not generally circulate outside the Library.)

Loan periods for circulating materials vary based on the type of material:

  • Books and CDs generally circulate for 3 weeks and can be renewed.
  • LPOP videos and DVDs circulate for 3 days and only to the Law School community. Renewals are not allowed.
  • Course reserve and designated study guide materials circulate for 2 hours or 24 hours, depending on their status. Renewals are not allowed.
  • Laptops and computer hardware circulate for 24 hours and only to law students. Renewals are not allowed.

Course Reserves

Your professor may have asked the Library to put materials for his or her course on reserve. Current course reserve lists are searchable through the online catalog, TALLONS:

The Library maintains items in course reserve as determined by the course instructor. To ensure that all students can have access to the same items, instructors place books, copies of articles, or videos/DVDs in Reserve, in closed stacks behind the Circulation Desk on the main second floor of the Library.

These materials are available for limited checkout periods from the Circulation Desk whenever the Library is open. (Loan periods for Reserve materials are determined by the course instructor and vary between 2 hours or 24 hours.) There are no holds or renewals on Reserve items. To allow others a chance to use an item, it may only be checked out again after waiting one hour after its return.

Gadgets for Loan

The following equipment may be checked out from the Library's front Circulation Desk.

Laptops - Dell laptops, MacBook Pros, and Acer netbooks are available for 24-hour loan to law students. All are equipped with wireless and wired network cards. Because the Law Library is unable to guarantee problem-free operation with any software not already installed, library-owned laptops cannot be used for Law School examinations.

AC Adapters - AC adapters for selected laptops are also available for 24-hour checkout. Models available include those used on Dell Latitudes, Apple MacBooks, Sony Vaios, and Lenovo ThinkPads.

Macbook VGA Adapters - Use this adapter available for 24-hour checkout to connect your Macbook to a video projector.

Video Camcorders - To help law students prepare for your oral advocacy exercises, there are Flip video camcorders available at the Circulation Desk for 24-hour loan. Tripods are also available for checkout.

Audiocassette Players - Available for 2 hour loan (library use only) for users wishing to listen to audiocassettes.
